ER Mapper

ER Mapper is the most advanced geographic image processing software product in the world. It runs on PCs running Windows NT, Windows 95/98/ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. For using the latest and the most advanced technologies, this software has a high speed in running its program.
Using ER Mapper you can display and enhance raster data, display and edit vector data, and link with data from Geographic and Land Information Systems, Database Management Systems or virtually any other source.
ER Mapper 6.3 is the latest release of ER Mapper and new features, which have been added to it. Many new wizards which are now included with ER Mapper for added functionality.

Image processing has become an important tool for a wide range of earth science mapping, analysis, and modelling applications. Following are just a few of the many applications for which image processing is commonly used:
land use/land cover mapping and change detection
agricultural assessment and monitoring
coastal and marine resource management
mineral exploration
oil & gas exploration
forest resource management
urban planning and change detection
telecommunications siting and planning
physical oceanography
geology and topographic mapping
sea ice detection and mapping
Therefore ER Mapper can process them.

Instead of writing a file to disk for each processing step, ER Mapper lets you combine many processing operations into a single step, and render the results directly to your screen display in near real-time. The set of processing steps you apply to your data is called an "algorithm" in ER Mapper. By storing the processing steps separately from the actual data, image processing becomes faster, easier to learn, and more interactive.

Processing algorithm

— formulas ( ratios . PCs etc. )
— Filters ( smooth , sharpen etc. )
— contrast / brightness
— more

A flowchart of typical image processing tasks is summarized in the following diagram, from data import through processing to final output:

Read external data from tape, CD-Rom, etc. and, if necessary, convert for use and processing in ER Mapper (Raster image data or vector line data)

View image data on a PC monitor or evaluate quality or area coverage, or display statistical information such as histograms or cell values.

Geometrically align images (register) or geometrically correct images to correspond to geodetic coordinate systems (rectify or ortho rectify)

Assemble two or more overlapping images to create a continues representation of the entire area covered (a mosaic)

Digitally process image data to aid visual interpretation or highest specific information (contrast enhancement, filtering, ratios, etc.)

Link direct to raster, vector, or tabular data in external products or files and display the data over raster images (without file translation)

Setup a map page, and annotate images with text lines, shaded polygons, legends, scale bars, coordinate grids and other map objects.

Save/export processed data to external formats, and print images and maps on over 200 hard copy devices and any windows printer.

ER Mapper has a number of useful wizards, which simplify and automate much of the image processing. These are summarized below:

Image Display and Mosaicing Wizard
Image Compression Wizard
Color Balancing Wizard for Airphotos
Change Projection/Datum/Cell Size Wizard
Ortho and Geocoding Wizard
Gridding Wizard
3-D Algorithm Wizard
Contouring Wizard
Landsat TM Wizard
Landsat Web Publishing Wizard
Common Geophysical Images Wizard
Magnetics Fourier Wizard
Page Setup Wizard
Local Government Applications Wizard
. tab file reader

You can use the ER Mapper batch scripting language to design your own wizards to simplify regular tasks. You can even add an entry or button to the menu and toolbars.
